Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the southern state of Karnataka, India, is a breathtaking destination known for its rich history, architectural marvels, and stunning landscapes. The ruins of Hampi, spread across an area of 4,100 hectares, provide a window into the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire, which ruled much of South India in the 14th to 16th centuries. Here’s an overview of what to expect on a trip to Hampi:
Historical Significance
Hampi served as the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and was one of the richest and largest cities in the world during its prime. The city was a major trading center, attracting merchants from Persia and Portugal. Despite its destruction in 1565 by a coalition of Deccan Sultanates, the ruins of Hampi have retained their historical and architectural significance, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
Architectural Wonders
The architecture of Hampi is a blend of Dravidian and Islamic styles, characterized by grand temples, palaces, and market streets. Notable structures include:
- Virupaksha Temple: One of the oldest functioning temples in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
- Vijaya Vittala Temple: Famous for its stone chariot and musical pillars.
- Lotus Mahal: An exquisite example of Indo-Islamic architecture.
- Hampi Bazaar: A bustling market street that once thrived with traders and merchants.

Hampi is set in a surreal landscape of giant boulders, lush paddy fields, and the meandering Tungabhadra River.
